Where Both Are Here

Where Both Are Here explores symbiotic relationships that have developed between two elements in which the survival and demise of each are linked.

In the case of lichen and rock, the rock provides a structure on which the lichen can grow. Without a root system or vascular tissue lichen needs a structural partner to grow upon to receive sunlight and water runoff. In doing so lichen blankets itself across the rock protecting it from the weathering elements. But as lichen begins to decompose it releases its substrate into the rock, chemically degrading it in to soil.
