Mongolian Mirage

Anna Taugher

The Mongolian landscape is quickly disappearing, with a quoted 1,200 rivers, 2,600 lakes, and 93,700 springs gone in recent years due to the desertification caused by the mining industry. Artist Daesung Lee is capturing the transition of the Mongolian landscape from lush alpine meadows into arid deserts through billboard–sized paintings displayed en plain air. Lee's paintings depict  healthy, green, native flora  which he displays within the backdrop of the desertified lands of present times. The photographs below show the interaction of the people of Mongolia with these life-size billboards of land past, showing the struggle for natural resources that affect them and soon will effect us all without change.

The annual Angkor Photo Festival & Workshops brings international photographers and their works to a new part of the world (when speaking about professional photography) while exposing and showcasing Asian Photographers. At this year's festival a new program titled "Impact Project" was displayed. The premise being to document people or organizations that are working towards creating a positive impact on the community they reside in. The image featured above captured by Luke Duggleby documents the Cambodian-Buddhist eco-warrior movement set to preserve endangered forest by turning them into sacred lands. Find more about this project and the others featured in the Impact Project here.

With the close of the end of the year it is a time for reflection and action, what is your Impact Project?

Chasing the Light

Anna Taugher

I have long since been captivated by Zaria Forman's pastels, the hyper-realistic texture she creates of iceberg landscapes is mesmerizing to say the least. Zaria began creating to emulate her mother as her mom pursued her fine-arts photography on family vacations to remote locations. Now her artwork is dedicated to pursuing the areas her mother was captivated with while capturing these landscapes before the disappear, bringing awareness to the places that will soon leave us if something is not done. Forman leads expeditions to locales that are most effected by climate change with the most notable being 2012's Chasing the Light to Greenland. To document the world around you through an artistic medium while bringing awareness to the natural world that needs our help due to our harm is an applaudable achievement and a goal that I continuously pursue. Which areas do you cherish?
